New Features

Avira AntiVir ProActiv
Starting with Version 10, we integrated the new behavior-based detection technology. Read more details under "Avira AntiVir ProActiv".

Improved User Interface
We have revised and updated the user interface. Among other things, we have optimized the grouping of configuration settings for Normal mode and Expert mode. You are more than welcome to give us your feedback on this.

Time scheduling in the Parental Control
You can now set surfing time restrictions in the Parental Control module, by selecting the exact surfing hours or allocating specific time limits.

Generic malware removal and the new AntiVir Guard
The Guard can now repair your system, in case of active malware. Basically, when malware is detected, the access is denied and you can press the Remove button in the slide-up or view more details first, before removing it. The malware removal should now work even in case of unknown, active malware.

Optional email footer
AntiVir MailGuard can now insert an email footer to the sent emails, specifying that the email is “Checked by AntiVir“ and eventually adding other optional texts.

Avira AntiVir ProActiv

ProActiv is a new Avira technology for detecting Malware based on its behavior. If there are activities of virulent origin, Avira AntiVir ProActiv blocks them. Avira AntiVir ProActiv completes the existing signature-based, generic and heuristic detection processes, with an advanced method meant to effectively protect you against infection with unknown malware. Please note, that due to its behavior-based approach, Avira AntiVir ProActiv cannot guarantee 100% malware detection. It may happen that some malware is not detected or that some clean files are erroneously reported as malware.

Data transfer and data protection

Avira AntiVir ProActiv sends the files it rated as potentially dangerous to an Avira Server. The affected files are exclusively executable programs and scripts. No emails, personal documents or similar data files are transferred. The transferred information is exclusively used for a closer malware analysis and for improving the rules set.

The data transfer is absolutely anonymous and does not allow any conclusion on the sender. Even indirect details, such as protocol or the computer’s IP address, are not stored. Only a small group of Avira malware researchers can access the transmitted files, to analyze the malware, in a hermetically isolated network. The data will not be forwarded to third parties.

With the installation of the beta version, you give Avira permission to perform an automatic background transfer of the files being detected as potentially dangerous, to its backend system. Similar to the usage of an online backup solution, there is no infringement when uploading copyrighted files. If you do not agree with the upload, you can deactivate this function in the configuration: "Guard | ProActiv | Join the Avira ProActiv Community".

Objectives of the beta test

We want to check how stable and efficient the system currently is. Avira Premium Security Suite has a lot of new features, for which problems with other programs or with certain system configurations cannot be excluded. Please test the following items with higher priority and send us your feedback:

We are also waiting your feedback regarding the detection performance of the program. For the beginning, the test program has just a basic set of rules. During this phase, the system sends us data, which help us enhance and fine-tune the set of rules (see also "Data transfer and data protection" above). These extended rule sets will be made available in a further phase of the beta test.

      现在的v10测试版更是bug一堆，沿袭了所有v9的问题。更增加了其他bug。所以现在只推荐喜欢尝鲜的朋友。我打包的v10测试版比官方的方便多了。

New Features

Avira AntiVir ProActiv
Starting with Version 10, we integrated the new behavior-based detection technology. Read more details under "Avira AntiVir ProActiv".

Improved User Interface
We have revised and updated the user interface. Among other things, we have optimized the grouping of configuration settings for Normal mode and Expert mode. You are more than welcome to give us your feedback on this.

Time scheduling in the Parental Control
You can now set surfing time restrictions in the Parental Control module, by selecting the exact surfing hours or allocating specific time limits.

Generic malware removal and the new AntiVir Guard
The Guard can now repair your system, in case of active malware. Basically, when malware is detected, the access is denied and you can press the Remove button in the slide-up or view more details first, before removing it. The malware removal should now work even in case of unknown, active malware.

Optional email footer
AntiVir MailGuard can now insert an email footer to the sent emails, specifying that the email is “Checked by AntiVir“ and eventually adding other optional texts.

Avira AntiVir ProActiv

ProActiv is a new Avira technology for detecting Malware based on its behavior. If there are activities of virulent origin, Avira AntiVir ProActiv blocks them. Avira AntiVir ProActiv completes the existing signature-based, generic and heuristic detection processes, with an advanced method meant to effectively protect you against infection with unknown malware. Please note, that due to its behavior-based approach, Avira AntiVir ProActiv cannot guarantee 100% malware detection. It may happen that some malware is not detected or that some clean files are erroneously reported as malware.

Data transfer and data protection

Avira AntiVir ProActiv sends the files it rated as potentially dangerous to an Avira Server. The affected files are exclusively executable programs and scripts. No emails, personal documents or similar data files are transferred. The transferred information is exclusively used for a closer malware analysis and for improving the rules set.

The data transfer is absolutely anonymous and does not allow any conclusion on the sender. Even indirect details, such as protocol or the computer’s IP address, are not stored. Only a small group of Avira malware researchers can access the transmitted files, to analyze the malware, in a hermetically isolated network. The data will not be forwarded to third parties.

With the installation of the beta version, you give Avira permission to perform an automatic background transfer of the files being detected as potentially dangerous, to its backend system. Similar to the usage of an online backup solution, there is no infringement when uploading copyrighted files. If you do not agree with the upload, you can deactivate this function in the configuration: "Guard | ProActiv | Join the Avira ProActiv Community".

Objectives of the beta test

We want to check how stable and efficient the system currently is. Avira Premium Security Suite has a lot of new features, for which problems with other programs or with certain system configurations cannot be excluded. Please test the following items with higher priority and send us your feedback:

Breakdowns
Serious loss in performance
Incompatibility with other software
False positives (supposed malware in „clean“ software)
Functionality of the new features
Operating problems
General feedback regarding the new features
Suggestions, other issues

We are also waiting your feedback regarding the detection performance of the program. For the beginning, the test program has just a basic set of rules. So it is to be expected, that only a few files will be reported as malware. Please turn your attention mainly to false positives, i.e. to programs falsely identified as malware. During this phase, the system sends us data, which help us enhance and fine-tune the set of rules (see also "Data transfer and data protection" above). These extended rule sets will be made available in a further phase of the beta test.

Company NewsAvira introduces the Japanese version of its virus protectionTue, 01 December 2009 German IT security expert Takes its virus protection program to Japan and continues its internationalization in Asia

Tettnang/Tokyo, 01 December 2009 – Avira’s anti-virus protection now speaks Japanese because from today the entire product range is available for private customers in Japanese. Also new is the local Japanese-speaking support service, which is on hand to help out should problems arise. Avira founded a Japanese company on 9 November.
The German IT security expert already has branch offices in Malaysia and Hong Kong.
It is due to open an office in China shortly.


More than 750,000 Japanese private users and a number of businesses, mostly from the banking sector so far, already use the English version of Avira’s anti-virus program. Avira now aims to improve on the already high level of customer satisfaction by introducing a Japanese version. At the same time, the IT security expert will become more accessible for existing customers and will expand its range of services. This means, on the one hand, that a Japanese team will control local activities and will act as an ear to the ground in the local market, enabling products to be tailored more closely to the needs of customers. On the other hand, premium product users will be able to access telephone support in their native language. All users will also be able to obtain immediate help at any time from the new Japanese online support forum.

“Our products feature an excellent detection rate, while at the same time also using resources very sparingly. All solutions are internal developments that reflect our almost 25 years of experience in fighting virtual malware,” explained Travis Witteveen, Head of Sales and MarCom at Avira. “We are very proud that the Japanese have already recognized the quality of our software. The localized versions of our products and additional services will enable us to cater to their needs more closely in the future and to gain new customers. We look forward to being able to consolidate our market launch with a local branch office in the near future.”

XP has a safety feature that is very annoying.  Whenever you lock up or freeze (WinXP was supposed to be very stable and stop the freezups - yeah, right) - XP flags all drives with current open files as "dirty".  Then when you reboot it automatically runs chkdsk on all dirty drives.  When chkdsk has completed, the dirty flag is removed.

We got some reports of an issue where using Avira in Windows 7 leads to regular chkdsk-runs upon reboot. Our developers are analysing the problem and now succeeded to reproduce it. We are also in close contact with Microsoft to get to the bottom of this issue. It is not just affecting Avira in Windows 7 though, many other Antivirus products seem to trigger this behavior occasionally too as we learned during the investigation of the problem.
Microsoft introduced a slight change in the NTFS driver in Windows 7. Anyhow, even Microsoft can not pinpoint the problem (which by the way occurs seldom) yet. Update: Meanwhile, we could reproduce the issue and track it down together with Microsoft.
As far as we can tell from the current state of investigation, the problem occurs in special conditions, when an operation is performed upon an already deleted file. This leads to the situation that the NTFS driver / the windows 7 kernel deems the file system as corrupted (which it is not) and sets the dirty-flag of the NTFS partition. This in turn leads to the chkdsk-run on the next start of the system. In previous versions of the windows kernel, the operating system just returned an error.
We found a workaround for this issue. A hotfix is currently being tested and gets hopefully shipped next week as update, if there are no issues showing up in Quality Assurance. The driver avgntflt.sys in version 9.0.3.17 will fix this issue then. We will continue to analyse this issue together with Microsoft as we need to understand the problem correctly in-depth to come up with a better solution; maybe even a Windows Update will be necessary.
